Ellen Whyte Shares Her Musical Journey on Portland Sound Legacy
On Friday, August 28, 2026, Portland Sound Legacy welcomed acclaimed singer, songwriter, guitarist, and educator Ellen Whyte to KBOO 90.7 FM for a special live interview with hosts Robert Davis and Michael LeClair.
During this warm and engaging conversation, Ellen reflected on a musical journey that has crossed blues, jazz, soul, rock, gospel, bluegrass, funk, and American roots music. She discussed the early influences that helped her develop her own voice and the path that eventually brought her to Oregon, where she became an important and enduring part of the Pacific Northwest music community.
The interview explored Ellen’s years with Reflex Blue and the creative work behind recordings such as Different Point of Blue and Standing at the Sunrise. The program also featured two memorable Ellen Whyte and Reflex Blue selections, “See In You” and “Devils Lake,” giving listeners an opportunity to hear the expressive songwriting, musicianship, and emotional honesty being discussed.
Ellen spoke candidly about the value of artistic recognition, but the conversation reached far beyond awards and career milestones. She shared her thoughts on songwriting, performing, teaching, and the importance of passing musical knowledge and history to younger generations. Her stories revealed an artist whose work has always been rooted in communication, personal experience, community, and a genuine connection with listeners.
Robert and Michael also invited Ellen to reflect on Portland’s changing music scene and what she hopes future generations will remember about the musicians who helped build it. Her perspective captured the central purpose of The Portland Sound Legacy Project: preserving not only recordings and performances, but also the voices, memories, and lived experiences behind the music.
We sincerely thank Ellen Whyte for joining us at KBOO and for sharing her humor, insight, music, and remarkable story with our listeners.
